The Program

1. You will have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Mike Berkley, the first acupuncturist/herbalist in the U.S. to specialize in the treatment of infertility. As part of our initial evaluation I will conduct a full and comprehensive traditional Chinese medicine intake. This part of the consultation will enable me to write a specific, customized, ‘just-for-you’ herbal medicine prescription, as well as a custom-written ‘just-for-you’ acupuncture-points-protocol for your acupuncturist to follow. And, if you don’t have an acupuncturist – don’t worry, I’ll help you to find one.

The herbal medicine we prescribe will be used to treat very specific issues. Whether your FSH is high, or you have PCOS, whether you are in your 40’s with poor egg quality, or low ovarian reserve, or if there is an issue with your husbands sperm, whether you have endometriosis, or blocked tubes, whether you have blood-clotting issues, or auto-immune dysfunction, our customized ‘just for you’ herbal medicine prescriptions will be created to specifically address the underlying barrier between you and baby! Once we are on your team, we pull out all the stops, get aggressive and tackle the issues.

You will take herbs for four months. In addition to being shipped a fully customized four month supply of herbal medicine, you will also receive an acupuncture-points-protocol designed specifically for your acupuncturist to follow. And, yes, I will be in constant touch with your acupuncturist to guide them and help them. They will be my hands, but I will manage your case personally! You and I will speak once per month for four months so that we may be in constant contact about your progress, and to answer any and all of your questions and concerns. Herbs: Chinese herbs have a long history of use in aiding fertility. Records indicating herbal treatment of infertility and miscarriage date back to 200 A.D., including mention of formulas that are still used for those purposes today, in the famous medical text Shang Han Lun. The first book devoted solely to gynecology and obstetrics, The Complete Book of Effective Prescriptions for Diseases of Women, was published in 1237 A.D. In modern China, herbs are used to treat infertility in both men and women.

Acupuncture: If headlines are any indication of what's hot and what's not, it's easy to believe that infertility treatment is strictly a modern day science, made possible solely through the courtesy of high-tech medicine.

But as good as modern science is, many couples trying to get pregnant find themselves turning to an age-old treatment for help -- one so steeped in tradition it's about as far from life in the 21st century as one can get.

That treatment is acupuncture, and today, even high-tech reproductive specialists are looking to the somewhat mysterious world of Chinese medicine to help those fertility patients for whom western science alone is not quite enough.

"Most of our patients are referred to us by reproductive medicine specialists -- they are usually women who have failed one or usually more than one attempt at IVF (in vitro fertilization), and their doctor is looking for something to help implement the success of their treatment, over and above what the protocols alone can accomplish," says Raymond Chang, MD, a classically trained acupuncturist as well as Western-trained medical doctor.

Indeed, in a study of 160 women, published April 2002 in the reproductive journal Fertility and Sterility, a group of German researchers found that adding acupuncture to the traditional IVF treatment protocols substantially increased pregnancy success.

2. You will also have a 1/2 hour telephone consultation with Dr. Joel Batzofin, a Harvard-trained and highly experienced Reproductive Endocrinologist. Dr. Batzofin is the Medical Director of Batzofin Fertility Services (www.batzofinfertilityservices.com), and has been practicing reproductive medicine for over 20 years. He will review your records and previous cycle history. This is a very, very important step for you in this process. Why? Because second opinions are critical when it comes to your health care! Dr. Batzofin started the largest and most successful IVF Center west of the Mississippi before being recruited to open and act as Medical Director for SIRM-NY. Because of his belief in the use of Complementary medicine in conjunction with traditional Western practices of infertility, he opened Batzofin Fertility Services right next door to the Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness so patients will have the benefit of both in one place. He is one of the foremost leaders in the field of reproductive medicine and exudes professionalism and compassion. He has a wealth of knowledge and a world of warmth towards his patients. He is a great listener and an excellent communicator. No rush-job with him. He will answer any of your questions and always return your calls and your emails personally – usually within 24 hours and often in the same day! As far as I’m concerned he is the ‘go-to-guy’ for Western reproductive intervention. Dr. Batzofin will also make recommendations for additional Western tests that may be deemed necessary.

The most important thing to know about vitamins and minerals is that they are best absorbed and utilized by your body when taken in food form rather than pill or supplement form.
